The West Valley HS-Spokane, Wa Marching Band was one of just a few bands to qualify for the National Cherry Blossom Festival in Washington, D.C., marching in 2006 (unfortunately during a rain storm). West Valley HS-Spokane at the 2009 Auburn Veterans Day Marching Band Competition. My main camera did not like the rain and stopped functioning so I used a backup consumer camera with a consumer grade wide angle lens so the result is slightly fuzzy on the right side of the image. I taped many bands and will upload some - others by request, due to time commitments. Due to the fuzzy lens, I will not upload full HD quality videos here. Good news - after the pro camera dried out, it is seems to be working again.

Ten high school marching bands from Spokane, WA came together to perform as a single band on Sep 21, 2001 in a tribute to America after the attacks of 9/11/2001. This was the largest assembly of musicians to ever perform in the Northwest. The event was video taped and later broadcast in New York City. Portions also appeared on ABC's Good Morning America. Taped originally in analog 8mm and remastered in 2007.

The largest evening Armed Forces Day Parade in the country is held in Spokane, WA, typically featuring over 200 parade units and 50 or more high school marching bands from all over the northwest. This year, I followed the West Valley High School Marching Band through the parade (this video was edited for their web site at wvbands.org). The band had just returned from marching in the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade in Washington, DC. They were one of eight high school bands selected from a nationwide audition to participate in that band. They may be a small band (from a small high school) but the did super well.
If you watch carefully, you'll notice that as they entered the television broadcast area, the automobile in front of their band (not connected with the band) suffered a failed engine. So the band kept on playing. This video resumes after they have already been on TV for 90 seconds! And they continue right on ... the rest of the tape, and probably the more interesting part, is their marching and their jazz routine, as I shot video from alongside the band, in front of the band, and behind the dance team. Spokane, WA is big on parades. The Lilac Festival and Armed Forces Day parade, one week later, is the largest evening Armed Forces Day Parade in the United States, featuring (typically) 200+ parade units and over 50 high school marching bands from throughout the Northwest. That event grew too large - and the middle school (and even elementary school) bands got their own parade, the Junior Lilac Parade, hold on a Saturday the week before. That typically features over 25 bands! This video follows the Centennial Middle School "Falcons" Marching Band in the May 2006 Junior Lilac Parade. They placed 2nd out of 7 bands in their division, and ranked very highly out of all bands. Bear in mind, this is a middle school.
