Pope Benedict XVI expressed his appreciation to the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre, one of the main Catholic organizations that supports the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in its pastoral and humanitarian activities. The organization has 24,000 knights in 52 countries worldwide. The Pope said his thoughts were with the Catholics of the Holy Land and their sufferings for the lack of peace, the economic crisis and the political instability. He added that he keeps a special spiritual closeness to the ones that are forced to move. As grand master of the Order, he says they have a particular interest in protecting Christianity in the Holy Land, because, as he sees it, Christianity today is threatened in its own homeland. But both excellent people. So it shows that God can work through different instruments and both can be very good in their own way. Whats clear is that Cardinal Foley shows no signs of slowing down, and is happy carrying on his work on both inside the church and out.

Matthew Festing was elected the 79th Grand Master of the Order of Malta earlier this year. He is the second consecutive Englishman to lead what is the world's oldest order of chivalry, with roots going back to the First Crusade. Despite their militaristic name and history, the Order's responsibilities are to offer medical assistance in more than 100 countries around the world. During a recent conference in Rome, Festing noted that religious organizations like the one he leads occasionally run into problems with local laws on separation of Church and State. That neutrality was a great benefit for them when they were providing assistance after a recent disaster. But even after a disaster or a conflict is over, that doesn't always mean that the work of the Knights of Malta in a country is finished. What's next for an organization with such a long and illustrious history?
