This was part of the Signing Through event on March 28th where people made friends across the enforcement divide using binoculars and a Sign Language interpreter. These were a couple of the exchanges. Arielle is from Hawaii and is studying at USD and Rolando is from Playas de Tijuana, Mexico. He works at a restaurant and is part of the deaf community. This was a fun event. It actually worked the way we roughly envisioned it. People got to know each other acroos the divide. On the US side, people were standing at the limit of State Parks and federally owned buffer zone between US and Mexico and making friends with people on the Mexican side standing on the lookout right against the border about 200 feet away. We had sign language interpreters on both sides.

Javier the Baker - Making Friends Across the Border at Signing Through Event March 28th, 2009

Carla, the sign language interpreter on the Mexican side is signing over to people on the US side about Javier, the Baker (el panadero). Norma, the interpreter on the US side has binoculars and is telling everybody can get to know Javier.
