Tornado World Record at Mercedes-Benz Museum Stuttgart
uploaded by starsandcars1886 at youtube.com
The Mercedes-Benz Museum is now officially home to the "strongest artificially generated tornado in the world". The attempted record was confirmed in the presence of Guinness Book of Records representative Olaf Kuchenbecker. The 34.4-metre-high artificial tornado serves to eliminate smoke from the museum in the event of a fire. "We are delighted that the Mercedes-Benz Museum is now also featured in the Guinness Book of Records," said Michael Bock, manager of Mercedes-Benz Museum GmbH. "By successfully achieving the world record as 'strongest artificially generated tornado in the world', the Mercedes-Benz Museum has once again underlined its outstanding position in the world of museums also in terms of architecture." The architecture of the Mercedes-Benz Museum placed particular demands on construction planners, architects and engineers with regard to smoke elimination. The provisions of the approving authority and fire protection regulations require all areas outside the fire level to be smoke-free in the event of smoke emission. However, due to the open-plan structure of the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the various exhibition areas are connected to each other without any fire zones via an interior courtyard and ramps. From the perspective of smoke elimination this presented a challenging task that could not be implemented through conventional fluid mechanics. It was necessary to take a new approach, and so a globally unique smoke elimination system was developed especially for the Mercedes-Benz Museum. In the event of fire, 144 outlets located along the core walls inject air into the interior courtyard of the Mercedes-Benz Museum. This generates an artificial tornado, and the smoke collected is then discharged into the outside air via a smoke elimination ventilator located in the upper part of the building. This procedure uses the principle of the tornado force, which has a devastating effect under natural conditions, to create a controlled life-saving form of fluid mechanics that opens up new architectural possibilities. The Mercedes-Benz Museum with its unique smoke elimination system was selected from among some 800 applications that are submitted each week to the Guinness Book of Records. With 110 million copies in circulation, the Guinness Book of Records has been one of the world's most successful reference works since the 1950s, and is now distributed in 20 languages and 100 countries. Since 2006, the German version of the Guinness Book of Records has been published by Bibliographisches Institut & F.A. Brockhaus AG. www.museum-mercedes-benz.com

Physics Guy Rap
uploaded by enginuitor at youtube.com
(Update: lyrics are back up: http://www.gregslab.com/misc/physics_guy_rap ) I should point out that there are some really grimace-worthy lines in the main verse. There is no need to point this out. I assure you: I, too, cringe every time I hear them. Please bear in mind that all this came about years ago, during my high school days. Original description -- "Physics Guy" was performed in March of 2007, for Ms. Houston's AP Physics class at Leland High School, in return for having a low assignment grade dropped (hence the reference in the opening verse). This was a rush project, and my first attempt at doing anything of this nature. The lyrics and "music" were thrown together over a couple of consecutive evenings, and the delightfully awkward result recorded for all to groan over.

High-temperature superconductor (Yttrium barium copper oxide) floating in the magnetic field of Neodymium magnets. This phenomenon is called the Meißner-Ochsenfeld-Effect and was discovered in 1933. The superconductor has to be cooled with liquid nitrogen which has a temperature of 77 K or ?196 °C. If it is placed in a strong magnetic field it remains in its position. It also works if you turn the track upside down. The reason why the superconductor can move along the track is because of the fact that in this direction the magnetic field is homogeneous.
Plasma Rocket

Plasma test shots from the VASIMR VX-100 prototype plasma rocket housed at NASA's Johnson Space Center. The video is slowed down to 1/2 speed. In general, these types of thrusters (ion thrusters, Hall thrusters, and VASIMR) take advantage of extremely high exhaust velocities and generally have the ability to operate continuously for months. Although the thrust is much lower than a chemical rocket, the ultimate speed and/or payload fraction delivered is generally much higher. A new higher power rocket (VX-200) is being constructed and will be tested in a new vacuum chamber that is large enough to drive a full size school bus into (with room to spare). The Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket (VASIMR) is now operated by the Ad Astra Rocket Company, created by former astronaut Dr. Franklin Chang-Diaz (7 Space Shuttle flights). What color is water?
uploaded by wbeaty at youtube.com
Filming on a gray overcast day. I debunk the common misconception that water's blue color comes from the reflected sky. The distant ocean here looks DARK BLUE with gray reflections, yet the sky is gray. The visible reflections are gray, yet this doesn't stop the water looking blue. Where white bubbles are mixed in, we see many shades of blue-green and blue. With a gray sky? In fact, water is a genuinely blue chemical, although thin layers do appear colorless. Water is very strongly colored in the infrared band, and the tails of the IR absorption curves spread into the visible spectrum, making water colored. As with window glass, if we look through a layer many feet thick, we'll discover its true color. To see the real color of any transparent substance, just hold a thick layer of that substance in front of a white background such as white beach sand or a white-bottom swimming pool. Here the white background is the white foam kicked up by the ship's props. For the science behind water's blue color, see: http://www.lsbu.ac.uk/water/vibrat.html http://www.dartmouth.edu/~etrnsfer/water.htm#blue http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_of_water http://www.webexhibits.org/causesofcolor/5B.html Note: Trolls & spammers blocked immediately. Curved mirrors - physics experiment
uploaded by coolphysicsvideos at youtube.com
http://www.fizik.si A curved mirror is a mirror with a curved reflective surface, which may be either convex (bulging outward) or concave (bulging inward). Most curved mirrors have surfaces that are shaped like part of a sphere, but other shapes are sometimes used in optical devices. The most common non-spherical type are parabolic reflectors, found in optical devices such as reflecting telescopes that need to image distant objects, since spherical mirror systems suffer from spherical aberration.
