Playlist Description:

New Orleans attorney and businessman John W. Houghtaling II has partnered with movie star Kevin Costner and other local investors to promote a machine to clean oil spills like the one currently threatening to devastate the Gulf of Mexico. A demonstration of the device, which uses centrifugal force to separate the oil from the water, won approval from Louisiana officials who are eagerly seeking a way to keep the leaking oil from damaging the state's fishing and tourism industries as well as threatening the barrier islands that protect Louisiana from erosion. British Petroleum, which leases the leaking well, has seen a demonstration as well but hasn't commented yet. The company has tried unsuccessfully to stop the spill, which has been spewing more than 200,000 gallons of oil daily since an explosion on April 29. Houghtaling is CEO of Ocean Therapy Solutions, a company he formed to back the innovative device. Costner has invested more than $24 million into the project. The machine can be taken out into the spill area via barge, where it can separate the oil and water at a rate of 200 gallons per minute, more than 50 gallons faster than the well is leaking. Once separation has occurred, the oil is stored in tanks. The water is then more than 99% clean of crude. The device has been more than 15 years in the making. Twenty of these machines are ready to go if given the nod by BP, Houghtaling says. Time is of the essence as the oil spill is already taking its toll on those who earn their livings through fishing and tourism in the gulf. The oil spill could soon become the greatest national disaster facing the U.S., conservation agencies say.
