The project "Inspire to Lead" was part of America's Promise Alliance and AT&Ts;My Idea grants initiative to engage young people in an effort to keep their peers in school. Idea Leader Iko'tsimiskimaki "Ekoo" Beck (Missoula, Montana) designed the project to give Missoula youth the skills to be leaders in their own community and the ability to create less bullying, less violence, and an increased awareness of the diversity present in the schools so that students feel connected and welcomed in their learning environments.

Idea Leader Melis Odabas Geldiay, 15, partnered with fellow student Natalie Cary who had a passion for sharing ways to reduce stress. The students worked with the International Association of Human Values to bring the interactive YES! Program to more DC area schools to expose youth to yoga, meditation, and breathing techniques that are so helpful in combating adolescent stress.

Twenty-five students including Chantal Hylton, 18, produced a special issue of their magazine, New Youth Connections titled "Will You Graduate?" Over 70,000 copies were distributed and included youth-written articles on choosing a school, attendance rates, GED, and obstacles to graduation.

Spearheaded by Ginia Moorehead,18, and supported by a trusted social worker, TEEN is a character building group for adolescent girls that created a bond that felt like family. As someone who had already dropped out three times, Ginia wanted to make a difference for others through weekly discussions and activities to enhance wellbeing, reduce trauma and support college and career exploration.

The Bushwick neighborhood came together for multiple interactions due to the leadership of Idea Leader Abdias Sanchez, 17 and her partner organization El Puente Leadership Center. The group organized a forum reflective of the 5 Promises attend by many including a member of Congress and participated in two Dropout Prevention Rallies on Wall Street and City Hall.

Lucy Tucker, 15, knew that expulsion and suspension rates needed to be addressed in her community through personal observations and her work with local partner, Kids Rethink New Orleans Schools. Lucy's idea was to bring the best in Restorative Justice practices to the system, but she needed to learn from others who used this technique. She organized a group to visit a Colorado community that had made great strides in this area and is now working to implement what she learned in New Orleans.

James Traynham, 20, and his peers at New Lens organized an interactive conference called "Education from the Ground Up" for 100 youth and adult allies. One solution idea from the conference became reality with the Peer Education Initiative. Interested high school students selected a topic they hoped to teach, received training on teaching skills and had the opportunity to lead their lessons in Baltimore City Schools.

Colton Bradford, 18, worked on a county-wide survey of all high-schools to compare campuses including a student exchange between rural and urban schools. Alyssa Baraja, 14, wanted to expose young people to specific career fields, especially law and public policy which is the theme of her Shortridge Magnet High School. She organized weekly shadowing experiences for students to observe court proceedings, legal aid, county holding facilities as well as a diverse series of activities for a "Law Week" for fellow high school and middle school students.

Shelby Jackson, 18, started a program called Scarlet Mentors to pair juniors and seniors with freshman to keep them on track. Stephanie Mayo, 17, was already engaged in the peer mentoring program with Voices of Youth in Chicago Education (VOYCE) but knew there were other ways to support students. In addition to retreats and other events, Stephanie introduced the concept of a personalized graduation plan for each mentee that would track the progress of students reaching their personally determined goals.

Benefiting from the hard work of many and the support of many partners and experts, the outdoor classroom was recently appraised for $84,000.

Modeling his work after an inspiring ninth grade teacher, Jonathan Crump, 18, knew that exposure to something that Mississippi youth don't see every day is a great way to keep them interested in school. Students who came to school regularly, improved their academic performance, and maintained good behavior participated in eye-opening trips to rebuild homes in New Orleans, visit a civil rights museum, or attend an NBA game.

Alexus Smith, 15, teamed up with other Girls Inc. young leaders to create a series of three youth workshops: Why Graduate?, Building A Network of Support, and Getting into College. Chris Brown, 18, and fellow members of the Chattanooga Teen Board pumped out their dropout prevention messages with presentations, a billboard, t-shirts and videos. In February, 350 students from 8 high schools came together for an all day Youth Graduation Summit where participants experienced a day of learning organized as if they were already college students with classes, seminars, and socials in groups named after college mascots.

Eric Clark, 17, organized his fellow African-American male students at Kenwood Academy High School into a group focused on fraternity, responsibility, and creativity. Members of The Brotherhood shadowed college students and toured colleges, held a Male Health Fair, and held workshops on topics like building relationships and understanding parents.
