Colors - Part 1 (intro before credit)
uploaded by 20thcenturyfilmdocs at youtube.com
Okay, here's the very intro part to "Colors," one of the best gang films to come out of the 80's...hell, ever! I had to break this up because the credits had a Los Lobos song that was (you guessed it) being blocked...so I added my own song for the credits, a rather ironic one. Stay tuned!
Colors (Part 1.2)
uploaded by 20thcenturyfilmdocs at youtube.com
And here are the intro credits...using Metallica music, since Los Lobos is apparently more important and gets flagged on YT. Whatever. Anyway, the REST of part 1 is coming up, then these other parts will be in 10 min. increments. ENJOY!
Colors (Part 1.3)

Greatest...LA...gangster-film....EVER! I really like this film, always have...it's frankly more realistic and covers the gang lifestyle and appeal in ways that "Boyz N Da Hood" and "Menace 2 Society" never could. Until "The Wire" came out on HBO, nothing came even close to touching this film. And you all very lucky I didn't listen to my gut on this one. My original plan was to make a new version of "Colors" called "Colors: Born in East LA," where I would mix clips from "Born in East LA" with this film. The possibilities for comedy are endless...but seeing as how I get burned now and then for my "Red Dawn subtitle re-edits, I really just don't have the patience to F-up this film like that. And really, "Colors" needs to be seen in it's original form, it just doesn't get enough cred. So, enjoy the film...unblemished by my evil mind.
Colors (Part 2)

Part 2 of "Colors." In this part, Hodges and McGavin (soon to be called "Pac-Man") start to see each others' abilities...and limitations. You can just see the look in Hodges eyes in damn near every scene: "Man, this kid is so full of piss and wind." And McGavin is so "Man, where did they dig up this old fossil?" In the last clip, you got to see 2 up-and-coming stars as members of the Crips, getting high in the rape-van: A young Damon Wayans (pre-In Living Color) and Don Cheadle as the head honcho in charge of the group. Later on in this clip, you get to see them trying to dodge Hodge's questions. But my favorite Wayans scenes come up later when he's straight-tripping on drugs, dancing around in his underwear in a TV/stereo shop, with a large stuffed bunny rabbit on his shoulders. Hey, if you think this was stolen from that acid-trip scene in Tenacious D: The Pic of Destiny, you're wrong, man! I'm sure Damon Wayans wants to forget that little scene. But I sure didn't.
Colors (Part 3)

Part 3 of "Colors." In this episode Hodges takes Pacman with him as he makes his rounds with the local gangs to see what's going on since the shooting at the beginning of the film. Pacman gets flaming hot-mad when some kid throws a rock, but Hodges knows better. Soon we get to meet Frog and Looney Tune, the local leaders of the Fences (sic), one of the local Mexican gangs stuck in the middle of the turf wars between the Bloods and Crips. This is the first scene we get to see the development of the obligatory "love interest" between Sean Penn and Maria Conchita Alonso. Frankly, I always thought she was a little old to be playing this role, but I guess Selma Hayek (wrrrarrrrooo) and Penelope Cruz were way too young back then. And MCA was adequete in this role, and frankly it doesn't distract too much from the film. Nonetheless, most people think of Sean Penn as the bizarre, opinionated liberal actor that is either loved or hated. But back in 1987, he was the hot-headed actor married to Madonna, someone with a penchant for decking the paparrazi! So I guess this role wasn't much of a leap for him, acting-wise. Still a good performance, for what it is though.
Colors (Part 4)

Part 4 of "Colors." The Bloods hold a funeral for their fallen comrade. But the funeral service is rudely interrupted by the Crips and a chase ensues after they perform what we nowadays call a "drive-by." When this film came out, there was a lot of controversy about this scene as being too overly dramatic and not realistic. Unfortunately, not long after the scene was filmed, art imitated life and a similar event happened elsewhere nearby. Gangs have always been a problem in LA since the late 60s, when the violence from the Vietnam War (and opposition/frustration against it) spilled out into the streets. But during the 1980s, gang warfare became particularly violent...while it abated in the 90s when a much lauded Bloods/Crips "truce" was reached, I think we're basically still seeing the same problems in LA, and other cities. And until we fix the underlying issues (lack of jobs, an unstable family unit, etc.), this gang problem will never be solved. But that's just me...
Colors (Part 5)
uploaded by 20thcenturyfilmdocs at youtube.com
Part 5 of "Colors." And yes, this has been "revised" to comply with WMG and their f'ing content scrubbers. Since I've gotten mad props on my first re-edit, we'll just keep the Metallica theme running with this one again ;-) We find out at the end of this clip why McGavin eventually becomes called Pacman, because their replacement car is a big, old, yellow sedan. Guess the LAPD didn't have a bottomless pit of money in their autopool to work with. Either that or the Narcs just kept all the good vehicles. We have really looked at Robert Duvall much yet in this discussion, but most everyone of all ages has seen this guy. Either as Don Corleone's family lawyer/advisor in the "Godfather," or as Col. Kilgore in "Apocalypse Now." Or you may have seen him more recently in "Lonesome Dove," or as the crazy preacher in "The Prophet." Or maybe you saw him in "Days of Thunder" as Tom Cruise's crewchief. Of course, people like me remember him from other great films like the relentless USMC pilot who tried to run his family like his airwing. OR, some of you older folks might remember one of his first roles...as Boo Radley in "To Kill A Mockingbird." It's ironic to see him alongside Sean Penn, because they are polar opposites, politically speaking. But unlike Sean Penn, Duvall tends to not where is politics on his sleeves...as much.
Colors (Part 6)
uploaded by 20thcenturyfilmdocs at youtube.com
Part 6 of "Colors." Here we get to see our intrepid heroes go in on a joint LA County Sheriff/LAPD raid on a drug house. Afterwards, Pacman finds out that one of the dealers they let go earlier in the film was THE main dealer for this ring. And as you can imagine, he's not happy knowing that he's out on the street still. So he takes his anger out on the "locals." Most people forget that Dennis Hopper directed this film. After he made "Easy Rider," he went on to make the disastrous film called "The Last Movie," which was about an isolated town coming to grips with the fact that the film industry that had supported it for so many years was going away. Great idea...executed badly. Hopper just kinda drifted for several years, then came back and did a few good films (such as "Apocalypse Now")...then after getting out of rehab in 1983, he hit the ground running and hasn't stopped since. I'll never forget him in "Blue Velvet," that was the first film I really remember him being in.
Colors (Part 7)
uploaded by 20thcenturyfilmdocs at youtube.com
Part 7 of "Colors." Pacman's tear continues. After an unnecessarily violent arrest takes place, Hodges has to set him straight. Then things get person as his lady-friend tells him one of the guys he tap-danced on was, like, her brother or something...soul-crushing feelings ensue. Back to Dennis Hopper, though. This guy was a real journeyman...he started as a supporting actor in many films, next to such greats as Paul Newman, James Dean, even John Wayne. He was a graduate of the Lee Strasberg's school of acting, so he definitely was exposed to "method" acting, and he uses a lot of that technique in his roles. I never met the guy, but he did do a Q&A after the re-release of "Easy Rider" back in the late 80s, and it was truly great to hear him speak about some of the basics that actors use to create intense emotional scenes when acting. Man, I'm so glad I ditched my shitty job at a fast-food restaurant to see that! It's a real shame that it appears he has colon cancer, and that it's apparently spreading. So this great man, one of the last remaining actors to have been around when Hollywood was producing some REALLY good actors/actresses and films, may not be long on this earth.
Colors (Part 8)
uploaded by 20thcenturyfilmdocs at youtube.com
Part 8 of "Colors." Now our heroes are closing in on the "connection" (Hightop) on the streets. And the chase gets real ugly. Pacman and Hodges have a heart-to-heart: "No hard feelings, but this shit's gotta end soon" is the general gist of the conversation. Next, Mr. "Hightop" gets jumped in prison, and he has to consider a deal to rat out on other gang-bangers BEFORE they get to him. In the last clip, we got to see Sean Penn watching some guys surfing out on the beaches, before he has to go apprehend Hightop. I sometimes watch this scene and wonder if it was an inside joke, intentional or otherwise...because as we all know, Sean Penn got his real break in "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," and his Spicolli character was a major surf bum-in-the-making. Oh well, something to consider.
Colors (Part 9)
uploaded by 20thcenturyfilmdocs at youtube.com
Part 9 of "Colors." Hightop's information leads back to Roccet and his part of the local Crips "affiliate." Hodges and Pacman start sweating some of Roccet's members in separate interview rooms, trying find out where Roccet is hiding. Mayhem ensues when they conduct their raid. And in retaliation, Pacman's name comes up in the conversation. Will he be the gang's next target? Stay tuned! My favorite scene in this film is later on in this clip...where the cops apprehend Damon Wayan's character, and he's straight-up tripping, almost buck-naked, dancing around with a stuffed bunny on his shoulders in TV/stereo store. It's the most freakin' hilarious scene in the film! What makes it hilarious is that it looks just like something straight out of "Cops"...for all I know, they probably got this story from the local LAPD.
Colors (Part 10)
uploaded by 20thcenturyfilmdocs at youtube.com
Part 10 of "Colors." Based on Damon Wayan's loose talk in prison, the local Mexican gang leader Frog hears about the planned whack-job in store for Pacman. So he lets the cops know, and they suddenly put a clamp-down on the streets. Roccet is PISSED, so when he finds out how the leak got out (and who probably passed it to the cops), he turns his anger on the Fences. More mayhem ensues. It's interesting to watch this film, post Rodney King and the 92 LA Riots. While most films in the police-movie pantheon tried to make the cops the good guys, "Colors" was brutally honest about the fact that the LAPD could be a little rough with it's suspects. This portrayal of the LAPD is at least a little more fair than another film that came out just the year before: "Dragnet" starring Dan Aykroyd, Tom Hanks, and a devilish Christopher Plummer. Or for that matter the first of the "Lethal Weapon" films, which came out in 1987 as well.
Colors (Part 11)
uploaded by 20thcenturyfilmdocs at youtube.com
Part 11 of "Colors." Hodges and Pacman visit Frog's house, where the drive-buy took place. And Pacman gets the surprise of his life when he meets his ex...at the same house! Of course, there are always innocents involved when gangs start a war, and this one is no exception...Pacman gets a taste of that as well. But unfortunately, Frog and most of the gang are gone, arming themselves for the eventual retaliatory hit they plan to make on Roccet. More mayhem ensues, and trust me, the body count goes way up in this clip!
Colors (Part 12)

Part 12 of "Colors." And yes, as always, here's the SHOCKING conclusion of "Colors." But NO credits, because I highly expect the closing song will cause the audio to get stripped out, so I'll post that as a separate...so that it won't screw up the last 10 minutes of the film.
