Lionel Richie wordt in Tuskegee, Alabama geboren. Eind jaren zestig vormt hij samen met enkele studievrienden The Commodores. Wanneer de groep in 1972 in zee gaat met Motown scoren ze hun eerste hits. (I feel sanctified, Slippery when wet). Vooral vooral de trage nummers vallen in de smaak. Eind jaren 70 breken ze door met nummers als "Sail on", "Still" en vooral "Three times a lady".
Richie schrijft in 1980 een nummer één hit voor Kenny Rogers. Het nummer "Lady" is ook terug te vinden op het album "Share your love", welk door Richie geproduceerd is. Een jaar later componeert hij het thema voor de film "Endless love". Dit nummer, dat hij samen met Diana Ross zingt, staat 2 maanden op nummer 1 in de Amerika.
Lionel brengt in 1982 zijn eerste, titelloze solo-elpee op de markt. Het levert hem 3 Top 10 hits op in de Amerika.
Door het succes van zijn solovlucht besluit hij de Commodores te verlaten. Een jaar later verschijnt zijn tweede plaat "Can't slow down". Het succes is overweldigend. Alleen in de Amerika worden er al meer dan 10 miljoen stuks van verkocht. Naast de nummer 1 hits "Hello" en "All night long" dringen nog drie andere nummers uit deze plaat de Billboard Top 10 binnen
Richie wordt de enige artiest van de jaren 80 die zeven jaar na elkaar een nummer 1 hit scoort in de Amerika. Zijn populariteit is op zijn hoogtepunt als hij in 1984 optreedt op de sluitingsceremonie van de Olympische Spelen in L.A. Een jaar later schrijft hij met Michaël Jackson "We are the world". Tientallen artiesten zingen het nummer samen in als "U.S.A. for Africa" en bestormen wereldwijd de hitlijsten.
In 1985 schrijft hij ook een nummer voor de film"White nights". "Say you, say me" wordt zijn laatste nummer 1 hit in Amerika. In 1986 verschijnt "dancing on the ceiling". De plaat doet het beduidend minder dan de 2 voorgangers. Zijn populariteit wordt minder.
In 1996 forceert hij een come-back met de plaat "Louder than words". Meest opvallende song is "Climbing". In 2000 komt Lionel Richie met een nieuw album "Renaissance". Zijn eerste single "Angel" krijgt de nodige media-aandacht.
