A deadly wildfire that has blackened a wide swath of tinder-dry forest around Los Angeles made another menacing advance Monday, surging toward thousands of suburban homes, as the AP's John Mone reports. (Aug. 31)

The raging Station Fire in the Angeles National Forest has grown to 85,760 acres on Monday, stretching from the Sunland Tujunga area in the west to Altadena in the east, all the way to Acton in the Antelope Valley to the north.
