Goal 2 Achieve universal primary education
uploaded by eugadproject at youtube.com
Millions of children lack access to school education.
The second goal is that all children obtain basic school education. The objective of the MDG 2 is that the right to learn is guaranteed to all children, boys and girls alike, rich and poor, in developed and developing nations alike.
Goal 3 Promote gender equality and empower women
uploaded by eugadproject at youtube.com
The MDG 3 tackles gender inequality and promotes the empowerment of women. Global data shows that the poorer the country, the higher the gender inequality. In the world today, two out of every three illiterate persons are women. Gender equality is a determining factor of development. What is needed is to create a virtuous circle of empowered women who generate stronger and healthier families which set the stage for more prosperous and just societies.
Goal 4 Reduce child mortality
uploaded by eugadproject at youtube.com
Each year, millions of children die due to lack of hygiene and exclusion from health services.
The number of children dying in the poorest countries of the world is nearly 50 times higher than those dying in developed countries. In a world that has so many resources and means, to allow such massacre to take place is unacceptable.
The MDG 4 aims at lowering child mortality rates. This means to expand care services and address all child health determinants.
In the world now, majority of the children get vaccinated and indeed the child mortality rates are falling but in sub-Saharan Africa, one in seven children still do not live to see their fifth birthday.
Goal 5 Improve maternal health
uploaded by eugadproject at youtube.com
Each year, hundreds of thousands of women die of childbirth in developing regions. The number of women dying of childbirth in the poorest countries is 200 times higher than those dying in developed countries. The MDG 5 is about reducing maternal mortality rates through greater access to reproductive health services, reducing adolescent birth rates and promoting the use of contraceptives. The inability of some governments to provide free basic medical services not only impacts the health and mortality of its citizens but also their wealth since they have to spend much of their money on health.
Goal 6 Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
uploaded by eugadproject at youtube.com
In developing countries many people die each year of preventable diseases. Thousands of people every day become infected with HIV and die from AIDS. The MDG 6 intends increasing access to treatment and stopping the spread of AIDS and diseases like tuberculosis and malaria. Thanks to improvements in prevention programmes and increased access to treatment, the number of newly infected people and those who die from AIDS has started declining.
Higher survival rates also implies that more people today are living with HIV, most of them being in sub-Saharan Africa. And Malaria, one of the biggest killers in Africa, kills one African child every 30 seconds while it is virtually absent from Europe and the Middle East.
Goal 7 Ensure enviromental sustainability
uploaded by eugadproject at youtube.com
The depletion of the Earth's resources is higher than the rate of regenerating resources. This means that we have not chosen a sustainable path of economic development. The MDG 7 acknowledges that development can be sustained only by environment conservation and recognizes the right of future generations to inherit an environment as preserved as the one that we are enjoying. Although the rate of depletion of natural resources is decreasing, humanity is unable to protect plant and animal species at the risk of extinction
Goal 8 Develop a Global Partnership for Development
uploaded by eugadproject at youtube.com
Although the world economy and security have become highly interconnected and the well being of each nation has a quick impact on the others, the nations are little prepared to work as a team in addressing the global issues. Although nations interact in a global village, they relate among themselves with inadequate spirit of solidarity. The MDG 8 is about promoting a healthy cooperation environment amongst nations. By making economic and political relationships fairer and dialogic, it will become possible to reduce the factors generating poverty and ignorance. Only a fraction of the funds pledged by the UN member states for achieving the MDG goals has been provided for actions against poverty. However, non-government organizations, the private sector and a number of developing countries are increasingly becoming significant sources of development assistance. A vast majority of people are opening up to curiosity about global issues and to learning from others. Today, there is greater acceptance and space also for culturally and socially diverse communities to enter into more peaceful and reciprocally fair relationships with each other.
