Alan Shepard was, probably, the first MAN who flew into space and returned SAFELY to the Earth, since Gagarin was a simple actor.
There is absolutely no proof that Gagarin was in space. No video, no audio, no photo. Nothing, except for the official statement of the Soviet news agency Tass. Gagarin did not even make a photo of the Earth when he allegedly was in space. He had "forgotten" to take a camera with him.
It is really astonishing how the entire world could believe the story with Gagarin's flight.
The problems with Gagarin begin with the official barefaced lie about the launching site (the cosmodrome Baykonur was built, in reality, at a distance of several hundred kilometers from the Baykonur village, near the Tura-Tam village), about the method of landing (the Soviets were stating for years that Gagarin landed INSIDE the capsule).
All we have, is the official statement of Tass and several minutes of a horrible-quality video with a man in helmet. Such video could be made anywhere. Even the famous video with Gagarin driving in a van to the launching site, climbing up the rocket and entering the capsule was shot after the flight, as it was recognized by the astronauts themselves and by Gagarin's daughter, Elena.

It is a fragment from the Russian mini-series "The Star Team" broadcasted on Channel One (Russia) in 2003. It features, among others, Elena Gagarina, one of two Yuri Gagarin's daughters, who confirms that the famous pre-flight video of Gagarin was filmed after the flight. With English subtitles.
In the same video, Korolev allegedly speaks with Gagarin before the launch and then wishes him a good trip. In reality, that scene was filmed at Korolev's home, and he has a reporter's mike (or, maybe, even a shaver) in his hand. (Note the blur in the background.)
OK, let us suppose that Gagarin indeed flew into space, and the Soviets did not show his flight live, because they were afraid he could die. But if everything went well, why they did not show it later? Why they had to make that video after the flight? Where is the REAL pre-launch video? Where is the 108-minute flight video? Where is the audio of his communications with ground control? (All you have is an alleged "transcript"). Where are the pictures of Earth made by Gagarin? (The first picture of Earth was made by Shepard on May 5, 1961.) We have nothing of it. All we have is the official Soviet statement. Why should we believe them? Why should we believe Communist propaganda?
The most probable version is that, on April 12, 1961, another cosmonaut was launched, but he died during flight, and all information perished. Gagarin was chuted from a plane. He landed outside the capsule, and the Soviets have denied this fact for years.
So, until the contrary is proven, the first man who flew in space and returned to the Earth was Shepard. It's very sad that he died without having realized that. Maybe others will.
P.S. According to N.P. Kamanin, the head of the Soviet Cosmonaut Training Center, Gagarin was a drunkard and a philanderer. Once, when they were on a vacation in Crimea, Gagarin went to her mistress, a young nurse. When his wife suddenly knocked on the door, he jumped over the window and fell on a cement border with his face, losing his conscience. As a result, his left eyebrow was injured and replaced with an artificial one. That was a real story, described in detail by Kamanin in his diaries (the entry From October 4, 1961).
