'Sex plot' thickens as sailors sent home in navy sex scandal

A GROUP of sailors from HMAS Success has been sent home and an inquiry is underway after they allegedly plotted a challenge to have sex with as many female crewmates as possible.
The sailors allegedly detailed their plot in a document called The Ledger where dollar values were placed on each woman's head, during an overseas deployment in May, Channel Seven reports.
Larger amounts were offered if the sailors could sleep with a female officer or a lesbian and sailors challenged each other to have sex in various locations, including on top of a pool table, the report said.
The arrangement was discovered while HMAS Success was visiting Singapore. The captain ordered the sailors to immediately return home to Australia after they were formally interviewed.
The Defence Department has launched a formal inquiry into the incident and confirmed an unspecified number of sailors from the Success, one of the fleet's biggest ships, returned to Australia in May.

A "PREDATORY culture" on board HMAS Success saw young female sailors routinely bullied and coerced to have sex with senior sailors, an inquiry has heard.
In an opening statement to the independent inquiry into an alleged sex ring on the ship, senior counsel for the Australian Defence Force, Douglas Campbell, said a report found male sailors had actively sought out susceptible female recruits for sex.
The report, based on interviews with crew members, found drugs and alcohol were allegedly used during onshore leave to coerce female sailors into sexual acts and threats were made to stop them speaking out.
In one alleged incident last year, a senior sailor carried out a public sex act with a young female sailor in an Asian bar while senior officers looked on.

FROM July 5, 2009 - Navy's secret shame - A GROUP of male sailors had a book recording bets on how many female crew they could have sex with.
A Defence spokesperson confirmed last night that an unnamed number of sailors on HMAS Success were returned to Australia from Singapore in May. A formal investigation is under way.
Concerns about the betting book - known as "The Ledger" - were raised by female crew members.
Dollar values were placed on the female crew, with higher amounts to be won if sailors had sex with a female officer or a lesbian.....
HMAS Success, an auxiliary oiler replenishment vessel, is on exercises in South-East Asia. It has a company of 220, the navy's website says.
Defence said it would be inappropriate to discuss details of the complaints or investigation while the inquiry was under way.
However, in a statement, Defence said the navy warned all its personnel to "treat others fairly" and that "unacceptable" behaviour would be dealt with.
The navy has a strict "equity and diversity" policy that demands workplaces be free of denigrating and harassing behaviour. The policy is regularly monitored and so-called "health checks" are conducted in workplaces at sea and on land to ensure the policy is being enforced.
Sailors at the centre of the HMAS Success allegations were removed from the ship after such a "health check".
The latest statistics available reveal that between 2005 and 2007, there were more than 100 official investigations into sexual offences and harassment in the navy. http://www.smh.com.au/national/navys-secret-shame-20090704-d8e2.html
