Spain defeated the Netherlands by a score of 1-0 to win its first World Cup title. Andres Iniesta scored the winning goal in extra time.
Iniesta broke free inside the penalty area Sunday, took a pass from Cesc Fabregas and put the ball just past the outstretched arms of goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg.
Even with Spain dominating possession, it was the Netherlands that had the best chance to score after 75 minutes of Sunday's foul-filled World Cup final.
Arjen Robben took a through ball from playmaker Wesley Sneijder and went one-on-one with goalkeeper Iker Casillas, but his 62nd-minute shot was kicked out for a corner by Casillas' right foot.
Before that, it was Spain that had the best chances to take the lead and win their first World Cup.

The Final was held on 11 July 2010 at Soccer City, Johannesburg. Spain defeated the Netherlands 1--0, after an extra time goal by Andrés Iniesta. The win gave Spain their first World Cup title.
The match was affected by a large number of fouls, particularly from the Netherlands. 13 yellow cards were given, and John Heitinga of the Netherlands was sent off. The Netherlands had chances to win the match, most notably in the 60th minute when Arjen Robben was released by Wesley Sneijder to be one-on-one with Spain's goalkeeper Iker Casillas, only for Casillas to save the shot with an outstretched leg. Meanwhile, for Spain, Sergio Ramos missed a free header from a corner kick when he was unmarked. Iniesta finally broke the deadlock in extra time, scoring a half-volleyed shot from a pass by Cesc Fabregas. Spain won the tournament by beating the Netherlands in extra time, 1-0.

La selección de España se coronó campeona del mundo por primera vez en su historia, luego de vencer 1-0 a su similar de Holanda, en partido disputado en el estadio Soccer City.
El cuadro ibérico logró alzarse con la corona mundialista luego de un ríspido partido que brindó poca espectacularidad en la primera parte, en la cual hubo escasas llegadas claras hacia los arcos rivales.
Desde el estadio Soccer City, y ante más de 90 mil espectadores, ambas escuadras salieron con mayor apertura hacia la segunda parte, con la idea fija de llevarse por primera ocasión en su historia el ansiado trofeo FIFA.
Una de las jugadas más fuertes del encuentro se registró al 42', en una entrada criminal de Sneijder sobre Busquets, que lo dejó tendido en el pasto.
Aunque España tuvo mayor posesión del balón en la primera parte, el cuadro holandés lo cerró con mayor intensidad, presionando fuerte, pero se fueron sin anotaciones al descanso.
La segunda mitad regaló mayor espectáculo y ambas escuadras salieron más abiertas con el objetivo de buscar el arco rival, en un encuentro que parecía que se resolvería con una sola anotación.
Al 62', hubo un servicio peligroso de Sneijder, Arjen Robben recibió el balón y quedó solo ante el portero Casillas, pero tras el disparo del holandés, el arquero español logró sacar con la pierna el esférico, cuando ya parecía vencido.
La respuesta de los ibéricos llegó minutos después por conducto de Xabi Alonso, Jesús Navas y David Villa, pero las porterías permanecieron sin perforar, en un encuentro de alta tensión, que mantuvo al filo de las butacas a los aficionados.
El arquero Iker Casillas terminó convirtiéndose en factor fundamental para mantener limpia la portería española, pues al 82' el holandés Arjen Robben recibió un pase desde el medio campo, controló el esférico, superó a la zaga española, y quedó solo frente al arco rival, pero el guardameta español logró arrancarle el esférico.
El tiempo regular concluyó con la escuadra holandesa con mayores posibilidades de anotar y con un conjunto español que poco a poco fue perdiendo el orden y juego de conjunto en la cancha, pero tuvieron que venir los tiempos extras.
El alargue salió más dinámico, con un ir y venir por parte de ambas escuadras, con mayores espacios en el campo.
Al 95', David Villa recibió el esférico por el lado izquierdo, se coló en el área holandesa, y quedó frente al arquero holandés, quien con una barrida le desvió el balón, en una jugada clara de gol, que fue el inicio de varias llegadas de peligro del cuadro ibérico, pero el primer tiempo extra concluyó con el 0 en el marcador.
Al 108', Iniesta se dirigió hacia la portería holandesa, pero Heitinga lo derribó sobre la media luna del área y el holandés se fue expulsado.
El encuentro se enfilaba hacia la definición por penaltis, pero al 116', Iniesta recibió un pase en contragolpe español por el costado derecho, el ibérico quedó frente al portero, disparó y anotó el gol con marca de campeonato, España se alzaba como campeón del mundo por primera vez en la historia.

Wat was het een geweldig WK voor het Nederlands Elftal onder leiding van Bondscoach Bert van Marwijk. Ze hebben gewonnen van Denemarken, Japan, Kameroen, Slowakije, Brazilië wat overigens geweldig was en Uruguay.
En daar stonden ze dan. In de finale van het Wereld kampioenschap voetbal in Zuid-Afrika. Spanje en Duitsland speelden de halve finale tegen elkaar. Veel mensen hoopten op Duitsland in de finale. We hadden nog wat recht te zetten in de WK finale van 1974 waar Nederland van Duitsland verloor.
Maar Duitsland won niet van Spanje. Het werd Nederland - Spanje in de finale. Heel Nederland keek mee. Het Museumplein in Amsterdam stond vol met mensen. Overal in grote steden stonden mega-schermen waar de mensen de wedstrijd konden volgen. In alle huizen in Nederland stonden de Tv's aan.
En toen was de finale. In de 1e en 2e helft werd er niet gescoord door beide teams. Er moest een verlening aan te pas komen. Het werd een wedstrijd vol met gele kaarten. Nederland kreeg er maar liefst 9. John Heitinga werd er in de verlening uitgestuurd omdat hij een 2e gele kaart kreeg.
Nederland hoopte er zo op. 3x is scheepsrecht. Maar dan in de verlening een doelpunt van Iniesta van Spanje. Met nog 4 minuten te gaan speelde Nederland op hun laatste beetje kracht wat ze nog hadden. Daar was dan het eindsignaal. Dit was niet de wedstrijd wat ze hadden voor gesteld.
Emoties liepen hoog op. Spelers waren boos of heel emotioneel. Weer geen Wereld Kampioen. Voor Giovanni van Bronckhorst, de aanvoerder van het Nederlands elftal, was dit zijn allerlaatste wedstrijd. Hij hoopte natuurlijk, net als de rest de beker mogen te ontvangen.
Na de grote teleurstelling mag er eigenlijk ook wel blijdschap getoond worden. Nederland versloeg het Grote Brazilië. Argentinië, Italië, Frankrijk, Engeland en Portugal zouden dit WK het gaan maken. Maar het was Nederland die in de finale stond!
