An Afriqiyah Airways Airbus jet crashed as it tried to land in Tripoli airport. There was one survivor among the 104 passengers. The Airbus A330-200 departed Johannesburg and flew to the Libyan capital and crashed just short of the runway. Afriqiyah Airways is a Libyan state-owned airline.

Volgens het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken is het nog allerminst zeker wie precies in de ramplucht U8711 van Johannesburg in Zuid-Afrika naar Tripoli in Libië hebben gezeten. Er is niet eens zekerheid over het aantal Nederlanders aan boord.

Bij de vliegramp in Tripoli zijn 61 Nederlanders om het leven gekomen. Dat zegt de ANWB. Er waren 62 Nederlanders aan boord van de verongelukte Airbus.
Een tienjarig Nederlands jongetje heeft het ongeval overleefd, zegt de Libische minister van transport. Het kind verkeert buiten levensgevaar en is opgenomen in het ziekenhuis in een ziekenhuis om verder onderzocht te worden.
In het vliegtuig dat vanochtend bij Tripoli verongelukte, zaten Nederlanders die een vakantie hadden geboekt bij Kras.nl. Dat meldt de organisatie op haar website.
Crisisteam:
Op het ministerie is een crisisteam bijeen gekomen en de Nederlandse ambassade in Tripoli probeert in Libië hulp te bieden waar dat kan.
Het crisisteam probeert te achterhalen wie er precies in het vliegtuig zaten. In een later stadium zal het team helpen met de identificatie en repatriëring van de slachtoffers.

Tussenlanding:
Vanochtend verongelukte de Airbus van luchtvaartmaatschappij Afriqiyah Airways bij de luchthaven van de Libische hoofdstad. Daarbij kwamen 103 mensen om.
Het vliegtuig, een Airbus A330, was vanuit het Zuid-Afrikaanse Johannesburg op weg naar Londen en zou een tussenlanding maken in Tripoli. Kort voor de landing verongelukte het. Het is nog niet duidelijk of de crash op de luchthaven zelf of even daarvoor plaatsvond. Ook de oorzaak van het ongeluk is onbekend.

Crash of a Libyan airliner and killing 105 on board the Libyan African Airlines at Tripoli Airport
Airlines announced that one of the African aircraft crashed during landing at Tripoli International Airport on the morning of Wednesday, May 12th current, as reported Jamahiriya News Agency (height).
The company explained that the crashed plane, model "Airbus 330" was on board (93) passengers, in addition to the crew, which consists of (11) individuals.
The plane crashed while trying to land at the beginning of the airport runway when it was coming from Johannesburg, South Africa on a routine trip bearing the number (771).
Authorities imposed a Libyan security cordon comprehensive on the Tripoli International Airport, and the channel ((island)) satellite news channel has announced that 105 people were killed in the crash of a passenger plane arriving from the South African capital Johannesburg near the airport in Tripoli, Libya, noting that the aircraft crashed at Sixth and about 10 minutes Thursday morning local time, Libya, during the landing aircraft did not explode before landing, pointing out that all the passengers from the Libyan nationality, but the news says there are other African nationalities were on board.
She noted that there is a channel to the girl survived the crash, was not yet confirmed the validity of this news.

Ambassade
Medewerkers van de Nederlandse ambassade zijn ter plaatse om hulp te verlenen en informatie te verzamelen. Het ministerie van Buitenlandse Zaken heeft een crisisteam geformeerd. Er komt een telefoonnummer waar familieleden terechtkunnen voor informatie.
Piloot sloeg alarm
De Airbus crashte tijdens de landing. Over de oorzaak van de vliegramp is nog niets bekend. Volgens een BBC-correspondent was het goed weer ten tijde van het ongeluk. Volgens Libische media is het toestel voor de landingsbaan gecrashed en heeft de piloot vooraf alarm geslagen. Hij zou de verkeersleiding hebben gevraagd ambulances te sturen.
Balkenende geschokt
Balkenende zei op een persconferentie geschokt te zijn door de berichten uit Libië. De gedachten van het kabinet gaan uit naar de vele mensen in Nederland die nu in onzekerheid verkeren, aldus de premier.

The only boy who survived the plane crash in Libya
Libya's state news agency said 96 bodies had been recovered after the plane crashed at Tripoli International airport. A Dutch tourism official said 61 of 62 Dutch travelers on the plane were killed, with one survivor believed to be a child.
About 100 people are believed to have died in the crash, the president of the European Parliament has said.
The Afriqiyah Airways plane was flying in from Johannesburg, South Africa, when it crashed while attempting to land at the airport in the Libyan capital, an airline spokeswoman said.
She said she could not confirm whether there were any fatalities.
"At the moment we have no details of survivors and Afriqiyah Airways will issue further statements when more details can be released in due course," she said.
Jerzy Buzek, the president of the European Parliament said: "Some 100 people have died no doubt from many countries around the world; this is a tragedy.
"I have also been informed that one 8-year-old child has survived, which given this tragic event, is truly a miracle."
The plane, an Airbus A330-200, was carrying 93 passengers and 11 crew members. It was at the tail end of its nearly 9-hour-long flight when it crashed.
A Dutch Foreign Affairs Ministry spokeswoman said it's "possible that several Dutch citizens were on the plane."
"The prime minister said there are several indications that there were Dutch citizens on board on the plane, but we have no official confirmation on any numbers or personal data of these people. There is no confirmation about survivors either, we are trying to verify this information through our embassy in Tripoli and we will let know more details when we have them," she said.
The British Foreign Office said it was looking into whether British nationals were on board the flight.
At the crash site, workers with surgical masks combed through the smoldering wreckage that spilled over a large area. A wheel lay atop a pile of bags. Two green airline seats sat upright and intact amid burned parts of the aircraft.
Officials recovered the plane's flight data recorder, which investigators use to piece together a flight's last minutes.
The Tripoli-based Afriqiyah (Arabic for "African") operates flights to four continents. The planes in the fleet carry the logo 9.9.99 -- the date when the African Union was formed.
The Airbus that crashed is one of three Airbus 330-200s that the airline owns.
