The Talk: What do Millennials want in their news media anyway? And how has RedEye been able to turn a dead-tree medium into such a dramatic success with Chicago's electronic, mobile generation? Tribune managing editor Jane Hirt, formerly the founding editor of RedEye, reveals editorial lessons learned and the challenges that lie ahead.
Jane Hirt is the Managing Editor of the Chicago Tribune, in charge of its coverage and newsroom staff. Before rejoining the Tribune as managing editor, she was founding editor of RedEye, a free daily newspaper for young, social, commuting Chicagoans that is published by the Chicago Tribune. The 200,000 circulation paper, which launched in October 2002, has been recognized as an industry innovator, including its designation as one of Editor & Publisher's "10 That Do It Right" in 2006. Earlier in her career, Jane was the Chicago Tribune's foreign/national news editor and copy desk chief, and she also has edited for the Perspective and Sports sections during her 18-year career with Tribune Company. She graduated with a bachelor's degree in journalism from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and was recognized by Crain's Chicago Business in 2006 as one of its "40 under 40." She's a member of Chicago's "100 Wise Women.
