Yemenia Airplane crash : Bakari Baya the only survivor - video footage

Yemenia Airplane crash : Bakari Baya the only survivor - A 14-year-old girl from Marseille is the sole survivor of the crash of a Yemeni Airbus in the Comoros Islands. More than a 150 other passengers and crew died, including the girl's mother, as the Airbus made a second attempt to land in bad weather, off the eastern coast of Africa. Scores of families waited anxiously at Charles de Gaulle Airport for news of their loved ones, but only the family of Bakari Baya were able to celebrate an amazing survival. Rescue teams at the scene of the crash pulled the girl from the choppy waters, as she swam among dead bodies and debris. Among the families of the dead there is mounting anger at the state of the aircraft on which their loved ones perished. The Airbus 310 was 19 years old and had flown for almost 52,000 hours. Yemenia Air itself was not on the EU blacklist of unsafe airlines, but the particular aircraft was banned from flying to France after it failed safety checks in 2007. "Those failings had been pointed out to the company by the French authorities and by coincidence this plane never reappeared in European airports since then," says French Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau. "That means this company from that moment was under surveillance because we pay close attention to security conditions of those planes." An airline spokesperson has blamed the crash on bad weather and turbulence. But a former Yemenia Air pilot says many of their planes don't have modern radar equipment. Airbus, which is still reeling from the crash of an Air France plane a month ago, has sent investigators to the Comoros.

French Navy Dispatched to Crash Site
uploaded by NTDTV at youtube.com
The French navy has released images of vessels it is sending to a site near Comoros where a Yemenia plane crashed with 153 people onboard. Meanwhile, Yemeni airline releases the passenger list in Paris. Here's more on the story. Two French navy ships are expected to arrive on Wednesday morning at the site near Comoros where a Yemenia plane crashed Tuesday morning. Photos released by the media section of the French defence department showed file images of the vessels currently on their way to the scene. The French military has sent army and civilian medical teams, boats and divers to the crash site. Comoros authorities sent small speedboats. Meanwhile in Paris, Yemenia released a list of passengers onboard the Airbus plane that crashed. 153 people were onboard the plane including 142 passengers and 11 crew members. [Mohamed Lihoma, French Resident "I was given this list to see whether I could recognise someone if bodies were found later, to indicate how they were dressed, so as to identify the bodies. That's why we were given those lists". Many of the passengers were families from France's large Comoran community who were travelling home for the holidays. [Rohff, Franco-Comoran] "Since my childhood I have been hearing about this airline, people say it's a flying trash bin, that it does not comply with international safety standards. The head of the Comoran diaspora had told this to the Comoran authorities, but nothing has ever been done about it. It doesn't surprise me, but it is a shame to have to go through this. 153 people died". Many of the passengers began their journey in Paris or Marseille aboard a different Yemenia plane, an A330. They switched to the A310-300 in Sanaa.

Un avión con 153 personas a bordo se estrella en el Índico
uploaded by videosjaviercheca at youtube.com

MORONI: Yemen plane crashes in Indian Ocean - 06-30-09
uploaded by MediaStops at youtube.com
The Times of India - 30 June, 2009. MORONI: An airliner with 150 people on board belonging to Yemeni state carrier Yemenia crashed into choppy seas as it came in to land on the Indian Ocean archipelago of Comoros on Tuesday, officials said. "The plane has crashed and we still don't know exactly where. We think it's in the area of Mitsamiouli. There were 150 passengers on board," Comoros More.. vice-president Idi Nadhoim said from the airport at the main island's capital Moroni. A Paris airport spokeswoman said a Yemenia flight left Paris on Monday morning before landing in Yemen and then taking off for Moroni. Ibrahim Kassim, a representative from regional air security body ASECNA, said the plane had probably come down 5 to 10 km (3 to 6 miles) from the coast, and civilian and military boats had been mobilised to start searching. "We think the crash is somewhere along its landing approach," Kassim said. "The weather is really not very favourable. The sea is very rough." ASECNA -- the Agency for Aviation Security and Navigation in Africa and Madagascar -- covers Francophone Africa. The town of Mitsamiouli is on the main island Grande Comore. "There is a crash, there is a crash in the sea," said an unnamed official who answered the phone in the Yemenia office in Moroni. He declined further comment. An airline official in Yemen declined to comment. COMING TO LAND Interior minister Hamid Bourhane said the army had sent small speedboats to an area between the village of Ntsaoueni and the airport. "At the moment we don't have any information about whether there are any survivors," he said. A medical worker in Mitsamiouli said he had been called in. "They have just called me to come to the hospital. They said a plane had crashed," he said. A United Nations official at the airport, who declined to be named, said the control tower had received notification the plane was coming into land, and then lost contact with it. Yemenia, which is 51% owned by the Yemeni government and 49% owned by the Saudi Arabian government, flies to Moroni, according to flight schedules on its website. Yemenia's fleet includes two Airbus 330-200s, four Airbus 310-300s and four Boeing 737-800s, according to the site. The Comoros covers three small volcanic islands, Grande Comore, Anjouan and Moheli, in the Mozambique channel, 300 km (190 miles) northwest of Madagascar and a similar distance east of the African mainland. A hijacked Ethiopian Airlines Boeing 767 crashed into the sea off the Comoros islands in 1996, killing 125 of 175 passengers and crew.
