New Features, New Builder

February 23rd, 2009

Last night we rolled out some new features on our builder and editor pages. There is now an edit icon you can click which provides you with options for your video. You can now do the following with a standard playlist, and you can also edit existing standard playlists to do the same:

All videos:

  • Create a custom title to override the original title. For example, someone titles their video “Funny Family Guy LOL Please Subscribe!!!” on YouTube, and you would rather title it something to fit in with the rest of your playlist. You can add a custom title like “Family Guy Moment #8: Stewie Sings.” Your custom title will display in your playlist instead of the original.

  • Create a custom description to override the original description. As of now, the only place the video description is seen is on the actual playlist page on Embedr. However, we are going to be adding some new player features which will make this a very valuable tool. Soon, we will import the description into the player and you will be able to do all sorts of interesting things with it.

YouTube Videos:

  • Set a custom start time and end time for your video. Say you have a 5 minute video, but you really only want 30 seconds from the middle of it. You can now use a section of a YouTube video by setting a start time and end time. Start your video at 2:26 and end it at 3:05. This opens a whole new range of possibilities for your playlists. You can essentially edit together an entire movie, using YouTube as your stock footage library. The only downside is that the custom start/end time is not exact. This is because YouTube will use the nearest video keyframe, which can be off by a couple seconds sometimes.

  • Choose a custom thumbnail for your video. YouTube offers multiple thumbnails for every video, and we figured we should do the same. You can now choose from 4 video thumbnails to display in your playlist. You might notice that sometimes 2 of the thumbnails are the same. I’m not 100% sure why this is, but YouTube offers 4 unique thumbs for some videos and 3 for others. Either way, this is a good feature that adds value to the custom start/end time. If you set a start/end time toward the end of a video, you can choose a thumbnail that better represents that section.

That’s about it for now. If you have any problems with the builder, please let us know.

Custom Playlist Colors

January 22nd, 2009

captureRecently, we’ve been hearing a few suggestions about being able to change the color of the playlist. Well, you’ve always been able to change the color, it was just kinda hidden. Ask and you shall receive, behold the new playlist color picker, now right in front of your eyes on the playlist page. The suggested colors are some of our favorite Embedr colors, but don’t let that stop you from clicking the Custom Color thumb and picking whatever you want.
